Customize a Scarf with Freestyle Diamond Painting

Nothing says style more than a fashionable scarf that’s embellished with a pop of sparkle! See how you can apply Diamond Dotz Freestyle gems to accessories and create one-of-a-kind statement pieces that give your wardrobe its very own punch and personality.

This scarf makes a perfect travel companion! Easy to pack and so fun to wear, just throw it on and feel confident and unique.

This clever DIY project is part of our Sparkle Your World series that celebrates creativity and travel, and how the two are intertwined. Join us on our adventure as we experience the world through an artful lens – one that includes beautiful places, and of course a lot of diamond painting! Our first stop is Greece!

Let’s get started! Here’s how to make a custom scarf with Diamond Dotz Freestyle diamond painting products.

First, gather your supplies:

• The Diamond Dotz Freestyle gems of your choice – pick colors to go with the scarf (or accessory) you’re embellishing
• Craft tray
• Stylus
• Wax caddy
• Dotz Stick brush-on adhesive
• Dotz Guard sealant
• Paint brush
• Palette (we used a ceramic plate)
• Dotz Protective Film (to protect work surface)
• Scarf or accessory

To begin, place Dotz Protective Film under the scarf to prevent adhesive from seeping through its fabric and onto your work surface.

Next, squeeze some Dotz Stick adhesive onto your palette and load your paint brush.

Use the paint brush to brush the Dotz Stick onto your scarf in the areas you plan to embellish with gems, taking care not to apply too much. Apply a thin even coat, and let that dry until clear. Apply a second coat and let that dry until clear and tacky.

As the Dotz Stick is drying, go ahead and get your first color of Freestyle gems ready to apply.

Take the canister of gems that you’ll use first and pour some into the craft tray as shown.

Give the craft tray a shake to get as many gems as possible into the proper position for applying. The gems should be laying flat side down, and in the channels of the tray.

Now for the fun part! Load your stylus with wax and begin dotting.

Have fun determining which colors you will use in which sections of your scarf, remembering that you’ll need to dot all of the sections where Dotz Stick has been applied.

We are matching the Diamond Dotz Freestyle gems colors to the color sections of our scarf – so purple on top of purple, red on red, black on black and so forth.

Remember that the design options are endless! You can choose colors of Dotz that contrast with the fabric surface as well. That’s what’s so great about Freestyle – the design choices are yours to make!

TIP: If you have Diamond Dotz gems left over from other projects, applying them “Freestyle” is a great way to use them.

Once you’ve finished dotting all of the sections, take your finger and lightly press all of the Dotz in place. This is just to make sure that everything is firmly set. All Dotz should be flat side down against the fabric, with the faceted side of the gem facing up – that’s where all that sparkle comes from!

Next you’ll apply Dotz Guard sealant to all the dotted areas of your scarf, using the same method as the Dotz Stick.

Apply a nice even coat, but don’t go overboard. Keep this coat thin – the Dotz Guard removes any stickiness, covering exposed areas of adhesive and making your scarf durable. It will prevent lint from attaching to the scarf when you wear it.

Once you apply Dotz Guard with a brush, wipe off any excess with a soft, dry cloth. Let Dotz Guard dry for approximately 30 minutes.

Your custom scarf is ready to wear! One of the great things about scarves, and why they make such great fashion, is the myriad of ways you can use them and tie them (depending on the length). Around the neck, the wrist, or even around a bag strap or ponytail – there are so many ways to amp up an outfit with a scarf. And a sparkling scarf is even better, don’t you agree?
