When you DIY your Christmas decorations you’ve got the ability to spice up your holiday look. Trendsetters report that this year, the incorporation of non-traditional colors is key. We took their cue and added a pink nutcracker to our collection. Notice the Dotz colors on the ornaments and stockings … pink, turquoise, light green, orange – touches like this allow you to take ordinary holiday surfaces and make them extraordinary!

For the foliage – and all of the projects in this blog post – you’ll follow the same basic techniques:

• Apply the Dotz Stick brush-on adhesive
• Get dotting, using the Dotz colors of your choice (there are 400+ colors to choose from!)
• Seal with Dotz Guard sealant, applying it to the areas you dotted

HERE’S HOW: SPARKLING ORNAMENTS

You know the drill: adhesive + Dotz + sealant! Here are some tips for decorating ornaments in particular:

• Determine your dotting area by working with the features of the ornament. For example, ours had indented sections on them, so we chose to dot alternating sections, leaving every other section undotted. The indents, or “grooves” of the ornaments made these a cinch!
• Get creative with your Dotz colors – as we already mentioned, you don’t need to stick with the traditional colors of Christmas. (In fact, this season, we suggest you don’t!)

Take a look at the gems section of the Freestyle product page, and note the color chart with 15 color families. Click on each individual color family, and the full range of shades within that family will be revealed. For example, the Orange family has 15 individual shades within it! So, click on the color family of your choice to see all of the shades within. Have fun picking your Dotz colors and get creative!

HERE’S HOW: CUSTOM CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS

We just love the organic lettering that we hand painted on these stockings – you can do it! Here are a couple tips:

• Use a steady hand and quick strokes to create your lettering. Apply two coats of adhesive following the instructions in the basic Freestyle tutorial.
• Don’t overthink it! You can always add more adhesive + Dotz to fatten up your letters if you like.

CREATE INTERESTING DISPLAYS WITH YOUR CREATIONS

Once you’ve dotted all the things – foliage, ornaments, etc., have fun displaying them! Ornaments aren’t just for hanging, and foliage isn’t just for vases.

You can see this super easy centerpiece we made simply by putting some ornaments in a wooden bowl with some fresh greenery and pine cones. The dotted poinsettia is a nice complement sitting alongside on the table. It’s amazing that something so simple can look so good!
